Description:

TRU Open Press is thrilled to support Natasha and the Cayoose Creek Band in their vital collaborative project focused on preserving the traditional medicinal knowledge of the Sekw’el’was people! While Natasha and the Band are leading the charge, exploring and documenting native plants and fungi integral to their traditional medicine, our role is to facilitate and enhance this important work in any way we can. We’re assisting with the initial setup of the project on the Pressbooks platform, providing photography and video work when required, and helping to foster relationships through local events in Lillooet, B.C. Once the content is developed in Phase I, we’ll provide copy editing and accessibility to ensure the information is presented clearly and effectively.

Natasha will document the uses, preparation methods, and medicinal properties of these plants. Each entry in the ethnobotanical textbook will capture essential details, such as scientific and local names, beautiful photographs, specific parts used, harvesting times, preparation techniques, and medicinal applications. Local stories and the structures of bioactive molecules will also be highlighted, with some pharmacology insights to follow in Phase II! We look forward to fostering a lasting partnership between TRU and the Cayoose Creek Band, as this project will create meaningful connections and spread knowledge within both the university and Indigenous communities.

Although the work will have a CC BY-NC-ND license, it is expected that the ownership and rights of this publication will belong to the people of Sekw’el’was in perpetuity.
