Description: This project builds on previous iterations of the PASSChem open educational resource by introducing a new set of advanced practice problems framed through case study scenarios. These interdisciplinary scenarios are designed to integrate multiple concepts across first-year chemistry learning objectives, offering students enriched opportunities to apply their knowledge in real-world and cross-topic contexts. Building on the foundations of PASSChem Version 1.0 (which established a style guide, glossary, and 15 solutions) and Version 2.0 (which added short instructional videos and expanded content in collaboration with student researchers Ashlyn Jensen and Chiemeriwo “Esther” Ojukwu), this phase continues to ensure pedagogical consistency, accessibility, and alignment with student needs. Deliverables include a glossary, learning outcomes mapping, as well as developing and embedding media into eight case study scenarios—six themed around health sciences, environmental issues, and laboratory experiments, and two focusing on local or culturally relevant contexts. The expanded resource is scheduled to launch in March 2026 and will provide students with an engaging, multimedia-rich supplement to traditional instruction.
Note: Version 1.0 is unpublished, but it remains accessible to TRU Open Press team members for reference.
- Presentation: PASS Chemistry (Version 1.0) – An Open Collection of General Chemistry Scaffolded Solutions to Support Student Comprehension Outside the Classroom was presented at the CSC 2024 Conference – CSC 2024 Conference Program

Impact Summary
- Used in course(s): CHEM 1500, CHEM 1510, CHEM 1520
- When: 2026
- Estimated number of students using textbook(s): Exposure to 300 students per term–total across courses 700 per year (anecdotal evidence also suggests these students continue visiting the resources after the course is completed)
- All courses use OER textbooks Thompson Rivers University – Chemistry LibreTexts
- PASS Chemistry Book CHEM 1500 – Chemistry LibreTexts
- PASS Chemistry Book CHEM 1510/1520 – Chemistry LibreTexts
- The courses also have OER practice problems which focus on a single concept: PASS Chemistry (Version 2.0) https://passchem.pressbooks.tru.ca/
- Currently, there are no advanced problems or case study scenario problems used in these courses.
- Average price of textbook replaced:
- Online resources for homework practice are in the range of $40 per semester.
- Textbooks with online homework are around $70 for 18 weeks access.
- Estimated savings: $40 x 700 students = $28,000
