Description: This project involves the adaptation and enhancement of an existing open educational resource (OER) to better support students enrolled in TRU’s MATH 0650: Provincial Foundations of Mathematics. The revised textbook will blend selected content from the original OER with newly created chapters on topics such as Venn Diagrams and Set Theory, Permutations and Combinations, Probability, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, and Polynomial and Sinusoidal Functions. The adaptation will include interactive materials designed to support student learning, such as embedded quizzes and visual aids.

A key focus of the project is the Indigenization of content through collaboration with an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper. This partnership will guide the integration of Indigenous ways of knowing into selected mathematical activities and examples, ensuring that the resource supports culturally responsive teaching and learning. The project also engages a student researcher to assist with LaTeX formatting, the creation of supplementary materials, and the development of interactive elements. This collaborative approach ensures the textbook is not only pedagogically sound and technically accessible, but also inclusive and reflective of diverse ways of knowing.

Impact Summary

  • Used in course(s): MATH0650, Provincial Foundations of Mathematics
  • When: Each term
  • Estimated number of students using textbook(s): 100 (estimated enrollment at TRU/ year)
  • Current textbook used for this course: iWrite Math 12 Workbook – $50
  • Average price of workbook replaced:
    • The average price of an Adult Basic Education Math-related workbook in Canada typically ranges from $20 to $60 depending on format (print or ebook) and publisher – we are using a modest estimate of $50/ high quality workbook, featuring accessibility and engaging components such as videos, graphics, and interactive H5P activity components.
  • Estimated savings: $50 x 100 students = $5,000 (at TRU/ year)
